A Good Name Is Priceless

I remember how my father was appointed a Federal Commissioner at the National Electoral Commission in the 1990s,  they organized Nigeria’s freest and fairest elections and MKO,  Abiola was declared winner.

Chief Olu Falae was the Secretary General of the Federation and he placed a call to Senator Olorunimbe Farukanmi and asked “Is Bisi Aladejana still a good man? “ Senator Farukanmi confirmed that my father was still a good man.

The next thing thing was that the Head of State at the time General Ibrahim  Babangida announced my father’s name on TV.  My father went from owning one of the most successful bookshops in Nigeria to a Federal Commissioner overnight because he had one thing working for him; a good name. He died in 2010 as a Federal Commissioner at the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission. It is till date one of the most respectable government agencies and only men of quality are given the privilege to represent their state.

My father’s favorite Bible verse was Proverbs 22:1 A  good name is more desirable than great wealth. Respect is better than silver or gold.

I was the stubborn one while growing up and whenever I got into trouble,  he would say “I will not let you soil my name”. I did not understand what he was talking about until I started meditating on this scripture yesterday.

You can build anything on a good name. If you have a reputation for being a man of your words you will never lack money. Trustworthy people are rare in the world today and if you are respected and loved by many people,  there is nothing you cannot become.

It is a good name that made General Buhari,  the president of Nigeria,  a good name is what made President Obama the first black American president.

A good name is the greatest investment you can give to yourself,  a good name is the greatest heritage you can leave for your children.  Do what you have said you will do,  you may not be true to this all the time but try your best.  Let your voice be trusted,  it is a quality that will serve you for a lifetime.

My 20 year dream is to see the Gospel preached to a billion people through the social media. You too can be a social media evangelist, kindly share and repost this Gospel of Jesus Christ so that others can be blessed just like you have been blessed. Thank you for reading.
